Raymond Carver grew up in a logging town in Oregon. After graduating high school, carver married at the age of nineteen and had two children. His desire to read up novels and magazines about hunting and fishing made him to become a writer with the influence of John Gardner. "Simplicity" was just the believer for his writing. On carver story called "A Small, Good Thing", he talks about Ann and Howard Weiss deal with the irreparable loss of their son. The uncertain facts about what happened to their son are just the collapse of how life is ending for them, because they dare to confront this disaster. The tow characters will find comfort and safety, in this case by the somewhat malevolent baker.

One Saturday morning Ann orders a birthday cake for her son Scotty birthday party. Scotty birthday party will take place on Monday morning. It is clear that the mother is excited about the birthday party, because it is a surprise for Scotty and she wants him to have a wonderful time. As Monday morning came, Scotty was on his way to school, a car hit him. At first, he did not look bad and he gets up and walks back home without any problems. While everything look ok, Scotty looses consciousness and his condition gets worse instantly. His sleep subsides into coma and he will die of this unknown sickness.

Dealing with the unexpected accident, the doctors feel incompetence and the parent's unhappiness. The doctors and nurses tried to offer comfort and encouragement to the parents, but at the same time, they asked themselves why Scotty wouldn't wake up. With this entire scene going on, the mother Ann does not believe anything about what is actually happens and she asked for the truth. Until now the doctors are not...
