Overall I found that the introduction to Ways of Reading drove at the point that a reader must take a more active approach while reading. Instead of passively accepting an author's words, one must work with them by piecing together the concepts that they would like to take away from the reading. In this sense, two people can take away completely different experiences from the same book. Bartholomae and Petrosky further go on to explain that a reader has two responsibilities to the author while they read, to expand on the ideas that the author expresses and also to challenge them. I thought all of these ideas make up the main point of the introduction, that the reader has the ability to work with the author's ideas on a more personal level. ? Through most of high school I read through the books I was assigned without much thought. While reading, I took little consideration of what was going on; I never looked for common themes or symbols. I found all this unnecessary, considering I did not know the essay question I had to expand upon until after I finished. He dominated organized crime in the Chicago area from 1925 until 1931 Capone had liked that idea. Later that year the Prohibition act came into affect and Capone became interested in selling illegal whiskey and other alcoholic beverages. Al Capone was America's best known gangster and greatest symbol of destruction of law and order in the United States during the Prohibition era because of his leading role in the illegal activities which gave Chicago its reputation as a lawless city. Capone's network came through Torrio's business. Capone and Torrio took over his uncles business after his uncle died (Haller, 358). And what better way to show them appreciation than to relive their work in the past and incorporate it in the future. What people in other countries call vernacular architecture we call folk architecture here, but mostly we identify the rural bahay kubo as a "native" house. The bahay kubo is by far the Filipino majority's prime idea of a traditional Filipino house. Vernacular architecture goes beyond the bahay kubo. From its origins as a rural bamboo and nipa house, it evolved into the urban bahay na bato (house of stone) during the Spanish colonial era. From there, certain features evolved into the houses built in the early part of the 20th century during the American regime. On the other hand, the early inhabitants of the Philippines were of many different peoples and of these peoples spawned the rich cultural diversity that we have now. Some ethnic communities scattered across the country, even to this day, still live governed by their ancestor's culture. Unblemished, these people's culture stands strong that even through the test of time, they still live in their ethnic traditional homes. Heart of Darkness contains two layers of narration. The outer narrator is a passenger on the pleasure ship The Nellie, who hears Marlow recount one of his "inconclusive experiences" (21) as a riverboat captain in Africa. This unnamed narrator speaks for not only himself, but also the four other men who listen to Marlow's story. He breaks into Marlow's narrative infrequently; mainly to remark on the audience's reaction to what Marlow is saying. He is omniscient only with respect to himself, since he cannot tell what the others on the boat are thinking. The inner, and main narrator of Heart of Darkness is Marlow. He tells the other passengers of his story "into the heart of darkness" (62) in the first person singular, and the only thoughts the reader has access to are Marlow's. This novel has two separate settings. The frame narrative is set in London, England, aboard "The Nellie, a cruising yawl, [that had] swung to her anchor without a flutter of the sails, and was at rest" (15). She is anchored in the Thames River, where her passengers wait for the tide to go out. The second setting is that of Marlow's actual tale. In it, he travels first to Company Headquarters in Brussels, then to the Belgian Congo in Africa. Much of the story takes place as Marlow fights his way down the Congo River, deep in the jungle. After accomplishing his mission, Marlow returns to Belgium to visit Kurtz's intended. All of this happens sometime towards the latter part of the 19th century, when imperialism in Africa was at it's highest, and the ivory trade was thriving. Consciousness is the awareness of the sensations, thoughts, and feelings being experienced at a given moment. Consciousness is divided into two broad states: waking and altered states of consciousness. In waking consciousness, we are awake and aware of our thoughts, emotions, and perceptions. When we enter an altered state of consciousness, our mental state differs from waking consciousness. Sleeping and dreaming our natural altered states of consciousness. Unnatural ones include hypnosis, and ones caused by drug use. Sleep occurs in four different stages of sleep. Stage 1 sleep is the state of transition between wakefulness and sleep, characterized by relatively rapid, low-voltage brain waves. Stage 2 sleep is a sleep deeper than that of stage 1, characterized by a slower, more regular wave pattern, along with momentary interruptions of "sleep spindles". Stage 3 sleep is a sleep characterized by slow brain waves, with greater peaks and valleys in the wave pattern. Stage 4 sleep is the deepest stage of sleep, during which we are least responsive to outside stimulation. Several times a night, when sleepers are in stage 1 sleep, sleepers heart rate increases and becomes irregular, their blood pressure rises, their breathing rate increases, and males have erections. This is known as rapid eye movement sleep or REM sleep. There are several theories that try to explain why we dream. There is the unconscious wish fulfillment theory, which is Sigmund Freud's theory that dreams represent unconscious wishes that dreamers wish to fulfill.
