As I walked down the hall of a huge building holding my fathers hand. I heard screams coming from all directions. "Dr. Lewis to room 114! Dr. Lewis to room 114!" I heard over the loud speaker. My father told me that we were going to see my new sister and that I was going to be a big brother. I was only 7 but I knew that this was going to be an important day that would change my life forever. I got to room 114 eager to see my new sister. As I walked in, I screamed "mom" and started to run to her. Before I could get to her, my dad called me over and told me he wanted to talk to me outside. “I love you, because in my thousand and one nights of dreams, I never once dreamed of you.” As most typical love poems start, all of them start with similes of live and what one would do for the satisfaction for love. Luis Lorens Torres wrote this poem about love because he must have been in love. This poem is very descriptive and would be difficult to make up if Torres was not in love. “I looked down paths that traveled from afar, but if it was never you I expected.” Looking back at Luis Lorens Torres life, he sees that nothing that he has ever done would come close to his feeling when he met you. “ Love me that way, flying over everything./ and , like the bird on its branch, land in my arms only to rest, then fly off again.” This poem like others where the poet describes his love to animals and compares the animal in a difficult situation where love would be the only way out for the bird. “Be not like the romantic ones who, in love, set me on fire. Thin is in. Many companies, regardless of their products, use unrealistic looking models in their advertisements. They try to make a connection between beauty and their products. It’s done in TV ads, on Magazine covers, and in magazine ads. In the last couple of decades the importance of beauty has become more prevalent in society. As sexier ads became more acceptable the models started to shrink in size. The models now used are on average are 5’8” a size 4 and weigh 120lbs. This is what advertising companies portray as beauty, although really less than 1% of the population is that size. Thin instead of curvy is now seen as beautiful. Models are often viewed as the ideal female body type by both men and women. They use women's insecurities and need to be beautiful to sell their products. This type of advertising sends the message that this is what beautiful people look like, some ads even go as far to suggest that fat is being fat is unacceptable and that message can have detrimental effects on society. Most clothing companies advertising campaigns use super skinny models in their ads. These ads are stereotypical of today’s superficial society. More and more emphasis is being placed on appearance. The advertisers use these models because the clothes look good on them, which then make their clothes look appealing and help them to sell. If an overweight person were to model the same clothes they probably wouldn’t look as good to the reader. Being Yourself and Not "Madison Avenue"It is amazing to find how strongly advertisers and society in general tout their products. I am using this time to examine the effects of advertising in both commercial and print. How the media affects our self-esteem, the increase of violence against women and children, and whether advertisers add to our own demise, in spiritual growth, financial, and in being safe. Everybody wants what the "Jones's" (your neighbor, a co-worker, etc.) has, they want the flashy look of Madison Avenue where the rich tout their money and the women in their thinness are painted to look healthy. How does advertising work? There are numerous ways through which people are persuaded to buy their necessities or even luxuries. It is especially through these persuasive actions of the marketers, publicists and producers that advertising " an active strategy of selling and marketing" (P. Falk 1997:65 in Buy this Book) became the means of selling the products. However, since humans are complex beings having many different habits and patterns, it is of utmost importance that these patterns and habits are identified and understood for efficient advertising. Thus, it is through the Manchester model that in this essay I will attempt to argue some aspects of advertising, which does not only revolve around simple TV ads but also draws from production through to reception. I will also argue that advertising does encounter difficulties that I will review as its criticisms. I therefore will not be using the Hypodermic Syringe or Two Step-Flow model to analyze advertising. The Puerto Rican trombonist Juan Tizol also embarked on an American jazz career, joining the Duke Ellington orchestra in the late 1920s. For Ellington he composed the first Latin jazz numbers, Caravan and Perdido. He also introduced his boss to the structure of Cuban music which, unlike jazz which allows its soloists complete freedom of invention, is based on a very precise superposition of rhythms, each of which has its own particular part to play in an acoustic tapestry that is constantly changing. The conga follows one predetermined line, the bongo another. Bass and plano both also make their own contribution to the polyphonic rhythms. Whatever notes they may be playing, Cuban musicians must respect a particular style of phrasing that neophytes (and even experienced jazzmen) often find hard to pick up. The Structure and Style of Renaissance Music In the Renaissance period, composers began experimenting with harmony in their work. Imitative polyphony, monophonic solo and polychoral music was the main style in the Renaissance. Imitative polyphony is when all the voices in a piece of music move at the same speed and share the development of the piece in a way that later became known as Fugue. Polychoral music is similar to polyphony but is written for choirs, usually to be sung in church. Monophony is simply a solo piece with one line of music and, naturally, one voice. Medieval and Renaissance styles differ in the way the music is written as well, in the order it’s written. Medieval composers built the music up layer upon layer, whereas Renaissance composers often preferred to write all the parts simultaneously, and blend them together rather than contrast them. There is a lot of emphasis on texture in polyphony music. Specific instruments were chosen because they had a certain texture in their sound and the composer would use that texture to compliment other textures within the piece. Renaissance Instruments The Renaissance saw many new instruments as well as old ones remaining popular. Different composers preferred to write for different instruments predominantly, but the basic availability remained pretty much the same. These are the main instruments that were used in Renaissance music: The Lute The lute is the ancestor of the modern day guitar. It held the highest respect of all instruments during the Renaissance, both as an accompaniment and as a solo instrument.
