CHAPTER THREE BUSINESS IN PINE ISLAND The Pennington/Milam Store and Post Office Almost all of the residents of Pine Island were either farmers when they came to Pine Island or they became farmers after they settled there. There were a few exceptions, but even the exceptions usually if not farming to some degree, at least had a large garden, chickens and a few cows. One of the first exceptions to farming was Duncan D Robertson who owned the combination Prairie View post office and a small general store. It was located on the south east corner of "The Old Houston Highway" and Cochran road. The house with two bed rooms, a kitchen, dining room and a shed room was built of rough, unpainted lumber. . The Store and post office section was remembered by James Elisha Pennington, John Wesley's son, as a twelve by twenty room attached to the northwest corner of the house making the building L shaped. . Lucille (Milam) Daut, John Wesley's grand daughter, remembers that it was roughly twice that big and divided in half by a wall with the store in one side and the post office in the other side. . Both of them lived there, James from 1897 to about 1914 and Lucille from 1909 to 1924.) Lucille has a photograph of the front of the store showing a typical late 1800's wooden store front with a porch across the front and a false front hiding the roof. The porch has six posts supporting the front of the porch roof. Judging by the automobile parked in front, the posts are about 6 feet apart making the store twenty four feet wide. Neither the store or post office section had a ceiling except for boards loosely laid on the ceiling joists to hide the rafters and provide storage space. . John Wesley...

Fulton County School system serves Fulton County, Georgia, to the north and south of Atlanta. The district includes 70 schools and supports 67,000 students. Additionally, more than 10,000 teachers and staff employees use the Fulton County School system's computing technologies. Every school has its own network, which is connected to the district's wide area network. The district has 20,000 Dell OptiPlex desktops with an average of four Dell PowerEdge servers in each school. At the heart of the district is the administrative building, where 45 PowerEdge servers, PowerVault storage systems and a tape library are used to process and store student information, and to run the school's district-wide e-mail system. Solution After reviewing Dell's benchmark data, Fulton County Schools chose Dell to upgrade server technology and implement the Storage Area Network. Dell Professional Services installed the new server hardware and the SAN in the administration building. Servers in the administration building's network room are rack-mounted, saving significant space. The district chose Dell Professional Services for planning and design, tuning and training for the SAN. The SAN is used to manage MS Exchange countywide; it also manages the district's tape back-up and storage library. "Our IT group had no previous experience with SAN technology," said Matlock, "so Dell Professional Services consultants came in and provided training on all the necessary administration and maintenance activities." Results Matlock noted the district is very pleased with Dell Professional Service's delivery. "The MS Exchange e-mail system utilizing the (SAN) solution was the most successful implementation we've ever done," he said. "The implementation went off without a hitch, and the system performs very well, with less downtime and fewer problems. We'll be adding more servers all the time," Matlock noted, "and we'll be sticking with Dell for three key reasons: scalability, reliability, and manageability." Cybersettle.com "Dell Professional Services have been key to our...

Will Sri Lanka's rubber industry bounce back? An improvement in prices has been responsible for an increase in rubber production last year and the first seven months of this year. This has resuscitated new hopes of a revival of rubber production and the development of a viable and productive rubber industry. Whether this is possible in view of a secular decline in rubber production for over three decades, is an interesting question. Increase in production ; In 2002 rubber production recorded a modest increase of 5 million kilograms after years of declining production. Last year's increase in rubber production of 5.2 per cent is a comparison with the previous year's production that was the lowest ever. This increasing trend of last year has continued into the first seven months of this year, when rubber production increased by 2.3 per cent to 53.8 metric tons. It is likely that rubber production this year could be around 95 million metric tons. This would be about a 10 per cent increase from that of 2000. Prices; The recent increase in production has been owing to an improvement in rubber prices from April last year. Several factors account for the improvement in prices. The price of synthetic rubber has increased perhaps due to a rise in petroleum prices. The major rubber producing countries of Asia have come to an agreement to curtail rubber production by 4 per cent, while the demand for natural rubber from China has increased. These factors are likely to exert an upward pressure on prices, a welcome change from the crash in rubber prices with the Asian economic crisis in 1997. Last year rubber prices increased by about 25 per cent in rupee terms. Latex crepe prices doubled between December 2001 and December 2002. Since 1997 rubber prices declined to levels that were lower...

"The Magic Flute" by Alan Spence is set during the 1960's and 70's in Glasgow. The novel follows the lives of four boys Eddie, Brian, George and Tam. Each character has a different personality, which the author brings to life throughout the novel. The plot chronicles the various ups and downs of the boys from their early teens into adulthood. The novel is written in the third person narrative with the author adopting an omniscient role. Spence adopts this narrative voice to enable him to be an all seeing, all knowing outsider looking in. This helps add to the realism of his main characters and how they cope with the main themes of sectarianism, bigotry, violence, friendship and poverty. I intend to examine the similarities and differences between the main characters and the techniques used by Spence to create them, which helps make the story so believable. I will focus on how the author cleverly employs dialect, imagery and characterization. Alan Spence's ability to give his characters a unique identity is clearly evident in the novel. The contrast between classes of people begins to become obvious as you work your way through the novel. Tam meets new people, from more affluent areas of Glasgow and sees a very different view of life: "Tam had never been in a house with a phone" This is just one measure of poverty Spence uses to emphasise this feature. None of the boys had experienced the trappings of material wealth. But for George this created a desire to escape from poverty and encouraged him to look at life with a different perspective and go on and find a respectable, well paid job. Not just to dream about it, but to consider life in detail and to discover its potential for him. George works hard towards an apprenticeship, with more...

Table Of Contents 1 Introduction 1 2 Ethical Difficulties Facing Multinational Corporations 2 3 General Principles For Ethical Dilemmas 8 4 The Problem of Questionable Payments 13 5 Conclusion 19 References 21 1 Introduction The continuing process of globalization and the liberalization of world trade has resulted in many companies expanding overseas in order to move into new markets and increase their profits. In the process, this has created huge multinational corporations, with the capabilities noted in the above quote, which operate in multiple host countries. At the same time, the governments of these host countries are independent and set their own laws, rules and regulations to regulate, and sometimes to direct, how businesses are conducted in that country which may be different from that set by the home countries of such multinational corporations. Conflicts in ethics can arise if the norms and practices of the cultures in the host countries are vastly different from that accepted in the home country. This paper discusses the ethical issues that can be faced by multinational corporations operating in multiple countries, and the general principles that may be applied to resolve such ethical problems In addition, this paper shall examine the problems relating to questionable payments faced by multinational corporations, and discuss the various appropriate solutions towards resolving it. 2 Ethical Difficulties Facing Multinational Corporations Domestic corporations operate solely in the home country where there is only one set of legal requirements to meet, and even in a multicultural and multiethnic country, there is a single set of acceptable standards for social and ethical behavior, along with a reasonably homogenous, or at least reasonably integrated, cultural composition. On the other hand, multinational corporations must operate across many countries where each country can have its own culture and laws, and their own diverse social norms and ethical practices. As such, "multinational corporations may find themselves perplexed...

Executive Summary This assignment deals with several areas of management. The following points are discussed: Radical organizational change depends upon the firm¡¦s resources, capabilities, its competition and leadership. During the change process, if measurable results are not achieved in six months, barriers will double. For successful change, it is vital to know the customer¡¦s real wants, as well as employee¡¦s belief that obstacles can be overcome and the end result will be to their advantage. The employee¡¦s may be resistant to change, due to apprehensions of assuming greater responsibility and concern of failing to comply with the new standards or rules set. It is important to build a powerful lead team, communicating the vision, empowering people and encouraging them to move forward. Managers themselves must change first. Innovators or early adopters are the vehicles for change management. Style, staff, skills, and shared vision are imperative for the successful implementation of strategy in any organization. Senge¡¦s learning organization diagram is a guide, with the circle signifying learning being a continuous process. It is orientational and enduring. The key focus for activity is in the triangle wherein we can make changes, but it is short lived. It has popularly entered the systems world, but its whole is not rigorous, even if the parts are. An entrepreneur takes risk and initiative to make money. They are not forever and are only when they are innovative. Leader is one who rules, guides or inspires others. An innovative organization to succeed needs to have shared values, intense customer focus and concentrate on new trends. The management functions of planning, organizing, leading and controlling should be modified to the five distinct stages of growth in an entrepreneurial business. To face the challenges of an uncertain, fierce and competitive world, the entrepreneurial leader needs to have a credible behavior with thorough knowledge...
