A World Unknown (My Trip to Europe) Ever since I was a little girl I dreamed about traveling overseas. Strange lands, exciting places, and new cultures have always fascinated me. I've always wondered what it would be like to speak another language, to grow up learning different customs, or to live in a completely different way than I do now. Three years back my dream finally came true. I got to travel to England, France, Switzerland, and Germany with my family and suddenly the world was at my fingertips. England's green hills and city life is unforgettable. Kensington, Westminster Abby, and Piccadilly Circus are just a few parts of London full of historic cathedrals, quaint little cafes, and amazing shopping places. Harrods, where the royal family shops, supposedly sells everything. Its loveliness attracts thousands of tourists, which include foreigners as well. My favorite experience in London was riding The Underground to see the Broadway play Fosse and watching the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace. England overall is much different from the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.). The language spoken in England is English, whereas the official language spoken in the U.A.E. is Arabic, but they also speak English. Also, the currency in England, the Pound, is quite high compared to the U.A.E. Dirhams. However, driving on the left side of the road is hard to get use to. The Eiffel Tower, The Arc de Triomphe, The Lourve, The obelisk, La Place de la Concorde, and Notre Dame are all located in the heart of Paris, France. Paris, with its French cuisine, romantic atmosphere and historical self-being fills you with a sense of complete contentment. I'll never forget sitting at a French cafe, eating a baguette, drinking mineral water, and watching the Parisians walk by. Paris's metro system makes going anywhere a fast...

During the tour, the leader lectured on particular paintings. She told the know history behind each shown painting. She also gave the history of the period in which the painting was painted. The lecturer also helped everyone to understand what the colors in the paintings brought to each painting. While viewing the many paintings, the first one that caught my eye was Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier and His Wife by Jacques-Louis David. This portrait was painted when David was at the peak of his powers and had become the standard-bearer of French Neoclassicism. Lavoisier, who is pictured sitting down to the right of his wife in the portrait, is best known for his pioneering studies of oxygen, gunpowder, and the chemical composition of water. Lavoisier's wife was thought to have studied with David. Lavoisier was involved in a political scandal. This even led him to withdraw the painting from the Salon in 1789. Jacques-Louis David used dark colors in this piece of art. David used the color red and different hues of grays. These colors may suggest a feeling of unhappiness. The focal point of this painting, in my opinion, is Lavoisier's wife. She is standing up in the picture wearing a white dress. The whiteness of her dress brings much attention to her body. That is the brightest color used in the entire painting. During the Neoclassical time period, artists at first sought to replace the sensuality of the Rocco Style with a style that was logical, solemn in tone, and moralizing in character. When revolutionary movements established republics in France and America, the new governments adopted neoclassicism as their official art style. Neoclassical art is a form of art based on fixed, ideal values. The next painting I observed was one from the Baroque time period. Venus and Adonis by Rubens interested me. Peter...

With more and more people driving every day, the amount of gasoline that Americans use is increasing rapidly. There was a time when oil was not as important to the United States, but the invention of cars has led to the need for oil which has caused tension and conflicts between the United States and oil exporters. Nearly every continent harbors oil, but the majority of U.S. oil comes from the Middle East. The U.S. has become very reliant on Middle Eastern oil, and it is this dependence that makes the relationship very fragile. Since the Middle East knows that the U.S. needs their oil so badly, they have a lot of power over the U.S., they use this power to manipulate the U.S. and to get what they want, whether it be money or war support. When the automobile was first invented, the inventor probably did not know that his invention would be the cause of such a powerful relationship. The actual invention of the automobile did not happen quickly. The first car did not even use oil to run at first, it used steam. It was built in France by Nicolas Joseph Cugnot in 1769. Although it was the first officially registered car, it was not efficient, only reaching speeds of 3 kilometers per hour at its fastest. Later, in 1807, Francois Isaac de Rivaz from Switzerland invented the revolutionary internal combustion engine and a car to go with it, the vehicle itself was highly unsuccessful, but the engine sparked ideas from other people. In 1864, the first gasoline powered engine was invented in Austria by Siegfried Marcus. It was able to reach speeds of 10 mph, and was considered to be the forerunner of the modern automobile. His idea was expanded on by multitudes of inventors including Nicolous...

So many wonderful people have contacted me through xanga and I want to meet all of you. Almost all girls mind you, and 4 days is just too short!!! My Trip to Portland According to Aristotle (384BC-322BC) "Misfortune shows who are not real friends" I found this to be extremely true in my summer trip to Portland, Oregon. It was around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night, when my new friend Bell received a phone call. To her delight it was her best friend Wendy from back home in Portland. After about an hour of talking they decided that Wendy needed to come down to Coos Bay sometime to visit. Well, me being the spontaneous person I am (and looking for a good excuse for a road trip) suggested that we go up that night and get her. Before we could go, of course, we had to talk to our parents. The first stop was Bells house, where I got to listen to 20 minutes of "Be safe, drive cautiously, call soon." Then it was my parent's turn. I knew they wouldn't let me go, so I just called them and told them I was spending the night out at Bells lake house. They bought it and the only thing left to do was to stop at the bank and get gas money, we did so, and then were on our way. By the time we actually left Coos Bay, it was around 11:00 p.m. and I was a bit tired- So I had Bell drive us up there. It was smooth sailing for the next four hours. We finally arrived in Portland at 2:00 a.m. and realized this was going to have to be a two-day trip and, therefore, we needed a place to sleep that night. Well, Bell, being a fellow Portlander, called up her old friend, Dan, and he invited us to go stay at his apartment. He gave us directions and as soon as we got there, we all passed out. The next...

Now the door opened slowly and I saw him, a figure as dark as the night itself and he had a chilly look as the night had. He was short statured, well built with thickset shoulders. He stood there, a dark shadow. I knew he was taking stock of the situation. Then something in his hand gave a sparkle. He had a big knife in his hand. As I saw the knife in his hand the picture of psycho flashed in front of my eyes. My heart sank within me. Instinctively my hand switched on the light. We saw each other. Our eyes met and I shouted loudly for HELP! With electric agility the man disappeared out of the room. I know he came with a dark design. But I cannot account for his disappearance. There is one thing, which to this day keeps me perturbed. Where had I seen him earlier? After about an hour of the incident my parents came back and I told them about the situation I had gone through while they were out. They were shocked to hear about the incident and at the same time happy to see how bravely I handled the situation. After that incident I had a disturbed sleep and had bad dreams throughout the night. From that day I learned one thing we must depend upon ourselves. Nothing is impossible for the willing heart. If we are bent upon doing something good, nothing can stand in our way. Even god will be on our side in the completion of the noble deed. In my point of view, self-help is the sharpest weapon in our hands. It is the most valuable force and vital breath of life. A strong willed person like me depending upon his own capabilities does not look forward...

Pam Morris' article, Supplementary Reading for Unit X: field work/Project work postulated the view that, "Surrounding the school is a powerful learning environment – the community. And, there is always some intended learning that will be facilitated by taking advantage of the environment." Armstrong (1980) noted that, "the community is really a laboratory for the Social Studies. As such, students can obtain practice in gathering information, analyzing their data, generating tentative conclusions, judging the worth of such results, and incorporating final judgments into the knowledge they have. As educational space, the community provides opportunities for students to apply their information processing skills from various disciplines." With these facts in mind one is cognizant that a field enquiry of any nature in most instances can prove to be very challenging and as such much detailed information need to be covered. This however, can prove to be very beneficial to students as well as teachers as they are both able to explore vast areas of enquiry that formally only presents itself as information found in textbooks. Students are therefore better able to transfer the knowledge obtained in the classroom setting to the new environment and examine phenomena, as they actually exist. It was with great zeal that I set out on my expedition do a field enquiry on Port Royal. The following is a list of the areas that were used to guide my enquiry. Housing Education Employment /unemployment Social And Cultural life Transportation Tourism I have organized my information in three (3) main parts A. Reflection on the field trip B. Brief over view of Port Royal C. In depth analysis of the relevance of Port Royal to the teaching and learning of Social Studies. Reflection on the Field Trip On Saturday, March 8,2002 we departed the University of the West Indies to go on field trip to Port Royal. We approach Port Royal by land,...

When i was little and had no sense, I took a wiz on an electric fence. It hurt so bad that it shook my balls and I took a crap in my overalls. This essay is fake please do not use it. One time I looked in the mirror while i was naked. I saw up my butthole. It blew my fucking mind. Then one time at band camp i stuffed a flute up my pussy. The metal gave me a rash and it has closed up since then. Ah, youth. So William Randolf Hearst shows up at a bar and orders a Martini. Then he is kidnapped and taken away to Xenu to see the intergalactic space lord who has taken the world hostage and is forcing the Thetans to keep being reborn into the body of humans until they figure out the true nature of reality. I hope this gibbrish was sufficient, as i don't plan i writing an actual essay. Thank you find free essays dot com, for making this process so convenient. And i thank god every day that I don't blow up. It is bitching at me right now to write more words so these words you are reading are mostly just to fill space therefore I hope that I have done enough rambling. My business teacher is a bigtime cock smoker. Seriously, I spent half a day writing my paper and he gave me a C plus. What nerve. I wonder how many words this is going to be. Is this the magical number. How about this sentence. If i was you, mister free essays dot com, I would have somebody view these essays to make sure they don't just fill in a bunch of shit and get away with it....
