Religion influences people as they go through life. At some point, everyone is subjected to one religion or another, usually choosing one to follow. I grew up in Christian home and my mother always made sure I was in church. Recently, I was taking a philosophy course which required me to write a term paper; I chose religion. Researching the paper, I discovered that my Christian faith was being questioned. I had always known that there were many religions, and that they differed, but I never realized how much they were at odds with each other. This particular attack came from the Islamic faith. Christians and Muslims have many similar beliefs, which differ slightly; however, they also have some distinctly different beliefs. The similarities begin with Christians and Muslims believing that Jesus will return; however, Christians believe his triumphant return will be the beginning of his reign as king, while the Muslims believe he will come back, win a battle, and be killed. Christians and Muslims agree that there is salvation, but their views on obtaining salvation differ; for instance, Christians believe salvation is a gift from god and Muslims believe that salvation comes from good works. Furthermore, Christians and Muslims both believe in Hell. Muslims believe Hell is a lake of fire where non-Muslims live in torment. Christians, on the other hand believe that those who are not saved will be thrown into the fire of hell for eternity. Both religions have other similarities, but they have many drastic differences. The differences begin when discussing the nature of man. On one hand, Muslims believe that men are basically good. They also believe some men have been guided toward right and some are left to err on their own. They believe all Muslims are naturally good, but believe their God, or Allah,...

Catherine Earnshaw changes along the course of the novel, from a wild, unkempt girl to a delicate proper lady. These changes began when Heathcliff and Catherine sneak over to Thrushcross Grange, and Catherine is bit by a dog. She ends up staying with the Linton's at the Grange for a period of five weeks. Catherine Earnshaw's character at the beginning of the novel is a mischievous, energetic, and tom-boyish. On her return, the inhabitants of Wuthering Heights are all surprised at Catherine's new eloquent appearance and manor. She is now "quite a beauty" as her brother Hindely states at the beginning of chapter seven. He also compliments her on looking and acting as a lady. On Catherine's arrival, Frances, Hindley's wife orders Ellen to help Miss Catherine off with her things, so none of her eloquence is disturbed. This alteration in Catherine's character is very significant to the story. In becoming a proper lady with upper class values, she will not marry someone as improper as Heathcliff. When Catherine chooses not to marry Heathcliff, she begins his manor of cruelty and revengeful attitude towards the world. And so wuthering heights is a good book. i really didn't like but if an english teacher ask you then you tell her yes you loved it. and now im just typing random stuff to make it long enough because this isn't my paper, it's my friends and he doesn't even know how to write a paper over two hundred and fifty words. I begin before the beginning. A paper must be written and papers always need to be introduced before they really begin. The first few paragraphs exist only to set up the real beginning where all the ideas that must be conveyed exist. The introduction is like the bread that presents the sandwich. Without an introduction this paper would be too messy; the meat of the sandwich would get all over the place. As I look down at all my sociology notes taken throughout the year, I familiarize the topic to myself once again. My mind thinks out-loud: I must write about my future career and the inevitable problems I will face; I must discover some of the unintentional consequences and relate them to what I have learned over the semester. As I ponder this topic, I soon realize that it may be more difficult than I expected. You see, I have no clue what type of sandwich I want; maybe a turkey and cheese, or a BLT, or maybe just a traditional. I'm in my second year at UH and have still not declared a major nor due I have any idea of an intended major, so how am I going to write a paper about my future career. I can barely look toward the future within college much less after college. I understand that no one really knows for sure what they will be doing in their future career. If they did end up perfectly in the career they had planned on submitting themselves to, I believe that they were too close-minded. They probably did not consider the twists and the problems that society gave them on their way. The last sentence that I just wrote caused me to realize that maybe I'm missing the idea of the paper. This...

"Water Lilies" a painting by Claude Monet Claude Monet's painting are among the most well known and enjoyed works of art. On display at the Atkins-Nelson art gallery is one of Monet's painting titled "Water lilies", which is one of the forty eight painting of the pond. Many of Monet's art work was done in his studio, at his home, with his landscape being the subject. Monet was born in Paris in1840 and moved to Le Havre when he was a child. It was there where he produced his first paintings. Monet traveled regularly between the coast and the city of Paris in order to study, paint and exhibit with other artists. It was in Monet's back yard that the series of forty eight canvases known as "Water lilies" was painted. In his paintings he concentrated on the enlarged pond with its floating pads and blossoms set in many clusters against the reflections of trees and the sky. The lily pads and blossoms are softly and gently implied rather then clear. Blurred in such a way to leave yourself to imagine, and to see the beauty that welds them all together. When evaluating this painting keeping in mind only the painting itself (formal criticism). I would have to say it is a good painting, very interesting in the way light, shadows, and reflection are produced in this painting. Evaluating with contextual criticism, my opinion would still be the same, keeping in mind the other forty seven "Water lilies" painting I have seen in books makes the painting even more interesting, even more beautiful. I enjoy nature paintings, especially with water, such as ponds, and streams. I believe that in this particular painting time period would not matter as much, nature relatively stays the same. Monet's palette tended warm and cool colors . The painting "Water Lilies" had more pastel light colors, such as greens, pinks, grays, blues, and violet. Monet has a very distinctive...

"True to Me" Born in 1902, in Joplin, Missouri, Langston Hughes spent most of his first years with his grandmother (Britannica). He was not raised under the best of circumstances but, he was very ambitious. He attended public schools in Illinois and Kansas and then graduated from high school in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1920. During the Harlem Renaissance ( The New Negro Movement) of the 1920's and 1930's, he went on to Columbia University in New York City, where he attended classes for one year (Britannica). An experience he had while attending Columbia, may have prompted him to write the poem, "Theme for English B", 29 years later. The poem's setting takes place at Columbia University's Morningside Campus in the city of Harlem. The year, 1949. A time where slavery is far behind, but no where near forgotten in the minds of Americans. Although Langston Hughes is the author of the famous poem, "Theme for English B", the speaker is a 22 year old black male student, who is given a seemingly simple assignment by his white English teacher, to write a paper which is true. The instructor said, "Go home and write a page tonight. And let that page come out of you–Then it will be true" (Hughes 2-5). Eager to begin his assignment, the young man waltzes home through the streets of Harlem, to the local YMCA which serves as his temporary residence, to gather his ideas. Once there, he sits and begins to wonder how he, a young African-American male, could possibly write something that the English teacher would consider to be true. He knows that being black will never make him white, and the English teacher being white could never be black. Then suddenly, it hits him. The simple fact that even though he and his instructor probably...

I arrived at the University of Chicago 2 months ago and since then, I've been sustained through numerous late night study sessions by the caffeine in Diet Coke. The product is available in many packages to suit the tastes of different consumers. These include 12 oz aluminum cans, 20 oz plastic bottles, and the 2-liter bottles which I prefer. They are also bundled differently, for example, sold separately, as six packs, and 12 packs. The bundling and packaging of the product affects the price per ounce and therefore, the set of Diet Coke products are not entirely homogeneous. The 2-Liter Plastic Bottles of Diet Coke which I buy, one at a time, however, are an example of a standardized product available in numerous shops in the University of Chicago area. It is a homogeneous good such that all the bottles are in exactly the same package, are the of the same brand, have the same content, and are therefore perfect (1 to 1) substitutes of each other. Table I shows the various locations and the nominal price in US$ for a 2-Liter Plastic Bottle of Diet Coke in the University of Chicago area, as observed over the past week. The nominal price is used as a measure of real value since these observations where made over a relatively short interval of time. Shop Location Price (including-tax) Hyde Park Co-op 55th and Harper $1.84 Walgreens 55th and Harper $1.84 Kimbark Liquors 53rd and Woodlawn $1.84 University Market 57th and Kenwood $2.12 Blockbuster Video 53rd and Hyde Park $1.84 Table-I At 4 out of the 5 locations, the price of a 2-Liter Plastic Bottle of Diet Coke is exactly the same! However, the price at the University Market shop is 10% higher. These prices can be divided geographically. One, in the immediate University of Chicago campus area (57th Street Market), and the other...
